My camera was stolen at the beach in Yangshou in China. I’m not a human being without a camera, so it was only a matter of time:
My new sweetheart is a Nikon D3100 with 18-55mm kit lens, made in Thailand!
The purchase decision was a matter of minutes, thanks to Ken Rockwell. For all camera issues, I recommend his brilliant photo page. In particular, the following articles:
- Recommended Cameras
- Your Camera Doesn’t Matter
- Why Your Wife Wants You to Buy A Fancy New Camera
- Composition: SEX and Balance
- The Importance of Timing
- How to Set White Balance
- JPG vs Raw
After some haggling I had to pay 400 EUR at the Nikon dealer in Chengdu. That’s almost 70 EUR cheaper than in Germany.
Simply because of the wicked shooting sound, I couldn’t have avoided buying this camera, sooner or later. Compared to my old Nikon D40 kit, the D3100 kit also features:
- less weight
- smaller size
- video mode
- image stabilization
- better auto-focus
- better white balance
- better Auto ISO
Now the photo safari can go on!

Ich schlage vor: Benutz die eingebaute Portrait-Funktion und fotographiere die Menschen, die um dich rum sind. Greg, Mrs X, Mrs X2…!
Muaha (-;
I’ve currently got a Nikon D50, but thinking of skipping the D3100 and going to straight to the D5100.
I find that the D50 is just too limited with it’s poor ISO, and dynamic contrast.
That said it’s not bad for something that first came out 7 years ago.
The D5100 is better of course, but also pricier. Ken Rockwell suggests it as the “best serious camera”.
